“It’s the children the world almost breaks who grow up to save it.” – Frank Warren
One young woman suffered adversity at a very young age. Homeless, she found Tumbleweed, and recently was accepted into the LPN program of City College at MSUB. This was her dream. She worked hard on her application and placement exams. When she learned she was accepted, Tumbleweed staff were the first to receive the news very early in the morning upon arriving at the Drop-in Center! She was glowing! Few realize the obstacles these youth must overcome. Adversity may cause some to break, but for her it resulted in a breakthrough!
A homeless young man in his 20’s was invited to participate in Tumbleweed’s Resource Center program, inaugurated in 2017. Though reluctant at first, he started the program, and he went from surviving to thriving. He had struggled to get a job due to his juvenile record. The Resource Center provided one-to-one engagement of a Tumbleweed advocate on his behalf. She supported his progress and stood by him. For months now, he has had a job. His employer loves him. He can afford his own home too, and provides peer support to other Tumbleweed youth!
It took one young woman years before she was finally freed from being the victim of human trafficking. She risked her safety to call the police on a pimp who was holding her captive. One in three homeless youth are lured toward trafficking within 48 hours of becoming homeless. When she finally made the break, life was still an uphill battle. “I tried being out there for a legitimate job. It was hard with no ID, no birth certificate, and no social security card. Tumbleweed helped me through that. I didn’t know how to do it on my own.”
